Independent Diamond Grading Laboratory
The Gemological Institute of Texas (GIT) is a professional grading laboratory focused on delivering accurate and consistent gemstone evaluations.
We work with jewelers, retailers, and individual buyers who need reliable certification they can trust for real-world decisions.
Our goal is simple — eliminate uncertainty in gemstone quality through transparent and standardized grading.
What We Do
Diamond Grading
Diamond grading involves careful examination of a stone’s physical and optical properties. GIT provides educational materials that explain how gemological laboratories evaluate diamonds using internationally recognized grading standards.
Gemstone Identification
Different gemstones possess unique mineral compositions and optical characteristics. Through educational resources, GIT explains the methods used by gemologists to identify and classify gemstones.
Gemological Education
Gemology combines scientific analysis with practical expertise. The institute provides articles and educational content designed to help readers understand gemstone grading, evaluation, and industry terminology.
Where Grading Meets Real-World Use
Most grading systems focus on classification. GIT focuses on usability.
Reports are structured to ensure they can be confidently used in:
- Retail presentation
- Trade and wholesale transactions
- Independent verification scenarios
Consistency That Holds Value
Inconsistent grading creates confusion and pricing gaps. GIT is built around a controlled evaluation framework that ensures results remain stable and comparable across different stones.
This consistency supports:
- Fair pricing
- Reliable comparison
- Reduced ambiguity in evaluation

Understanding Diamond Quality
Diamonds are evaluated using a standardized grading system commonly known as the 4Cs, which represent the primary characteristics used to describe a diamond’s quality.
Color
Diamond color grading measures the presence or absence of color within a diamond. Many diamonds fall within a scale ranging from colorless to light yellow or brown tones.
Clarity
Clarity refers to internal characteristics known as inclusions and external characteristics known as blemishes. Clarity grading evaluates the number, size, location, and visibility of these features.
Cut
Cut refers to the proportions, symmetry, and polish of a diamond. These factors determine how light travels through the stone and influence its brilliance, fire, and overall appearance.
Carat
Carat weight measures the mass of a diamond. While larger diamonds are often more rare, carat weight alone does not determine a diamond’s overall quality.
